点评:My husband and I took a private, 5-hour Sequoia Adventure Tour of the Giant Forest with a guide from the nonprofit Sequoia Parks Conservancy, and it was a perfectly wonderful way to begin our stay in Sequoia N.P.
We met our enthusiastic guide, Jack, at the Giant Forest Museum at 9 AM and proceeded to walk together along a web of trails, learning about the natural and human history of the area at every step. We’d hiked a couple of times before in Mariposa Grove in Yosemite, so this wasn’t our first experience with Sequoias, but Jack taught us a lot we didn’t know about the giant trees and their ecology. Combining that knowledge with the picture he painted of various phases of development imposed on the place by white settlers made us feel we were in our own, private time machine. Layers of history settled on our surroundings, and we could almost see the changing approaches to, and uses of, the sequoias and their environment. We got SO much out of the experience!
We had a late lunch break for the food we’d brought with us. An additional bathroom break would have been nice, but we’re pretty experienced travelers and were able to cope. After finishing several trail loops and an off-trail detour, we found ourselves near the Forest Museum with an awkward amount of time left in our originally-requested 6-hour tour — too short to add another walking route, but still about an hour before we were supposed to finish. The three of us discussed things, and Jack’s solution was to arrange for us to receive a credit for our unused hour (which appeared on my credit card later that day!). Very fair. He also gave us some great pointers of how to best use the next day, which my husband and I would have on our own in the park, and his recommendations turned out to be spot on.
