点评:Gare du Palais is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful railway stations we have seen. Its château-style architecture, reminiscent of Québec City’s iconic Château Frontenac, gives it an old-world elegance that makes arriving by train feel rather special. Built in 1915, the station has a charm and character that modern railway terminals simply cannot replicate.
But once the admiration wears off, the practical side of the experience is somewhat less impressive.
For travellers arriving with luggage, particularly seniors, the station’s location can be a challenge. Gare du Palais sits in the lower part of Québec City, while much of the historic city and the hotels are uphill. The climb from the station can be quite steep, and dragging suitcases along an incline is hardly the romantic introduction to Québec one has imagined! Local travellers have specifically warned that the hills around the station can be taxing with luggage.
The station itself is relatively small, and while there is seating, a café and basic amenities, there isn't much in the way of shops or places to eat. The VIA Rail business lounge is also considerably smaller than the one at Montréal, and access is limited to departing passengers.
Another minor inconvenience is that the historic façade and the more modern section can make the layout slightly confusing, especially for a first-time visitor expecting the magnificent château-like building they have seen in photographs.
That said, the station is clean, reasonably easy to navigate, and the staff are generally helpful. There is a charge for baggage that cannot fit into the overhead racks in some VIA rails departing from Quebec. That came as an unexpected surprise, specially for tourists
