Ruins of Chapel bombed in World War II blitz on the City, now a memorial
St Catherine's Chapel and Almshouses的点评
点评:Thursday 15th October we visited the ruins of this Chapel and Almshouses in Exeter City.
They are located at the intersection of Catherine Street and Chapel Street with Princesshay Shopping Centre nearby.
St Catherine's Chapel and Almshouses were built in 1457 by the Canon of Exeter Cathedral, John Stevens. They were built on the site of 1st century Roman watchtower followed by a 4th century Roman dwelling.
The buildings suffered severe damaged during air raids during the World War II blitz on the 3rd May 1942.
Rather than demolish what remained after the bombings, it was decided to preserve the ruins as a war memorial. The ruins took on a different significance when we learnt that they are a memorial and a tribute to people of Exeter and the Airmen that lost their lives during the war.
It was rather special that we were able to walk in to the ruins and walk about. The stand out feature at the back of the Chapel was the back wall topped with a small bellfry and bell.
As we walked around we saw inscriptions in the paving slabs that formed the pathway around the ruins.
There were also some artifacts, that were unearthed on site, on display they were contained in glass cases in the shape of Church windows.
At the time of our visit a section of the ruins were cordoned off, perhaps for repairs or unsafe to visit.
The ruins are a Grade II Listed Building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
