点评:Well, that was an experience, but not of the really good kind. We arrived ahead of time, waiting for others to arrive, but there was very limited seating and no ‘front desk’ at the entrance. Our first contact with a member of staff was a bit disheartening. We were informed that there was no real history of the castle to be had. However, the staff we met were all without exception extremely helpful, but we had a feeling we were being shepherded from room to room. The electronic guides were good, but it was not always obvious where to tap for information. There is no question that the star of the show is the view from the top of the castle but, oh dear, the light shows and projections were inappropriate and poorly presented, and the language used was flowery in the extreme and difficult to make out. And there were no signs anywhere warning of visually challenging light effects. The Rose Window is beautiful but entirely swamped by an unnecessary and unhelpful commentary, which could instead have been about the church that it came from and the story of its restoration. The Advocates’ Library was the best bit of the first half of the tour and showed what could be done by preserving an original part of the castle. But what a missed opportunity to retain, or re-create, the Courtroom. Midway through the tour we found ourselves in the cafe, a lovely, airy space and, surprise surprise, some limited information about the history of the castle. To continue the tour, we had to be checked in again individually by a member of staff, which created a bottleneck (did they not consider issuing a wristband at check in?). This part of the castle houses a Runrig exhibition (extremely interesting if you like Runrig) and a tapestry room (less so, unless you love tapestries and embroidery). Surely an attraction entitled ‘The Inverness Castle Experience’ should feature much more of the castle itself and its history. We came away feeling disappointed, not by the Castle but by the Experience.
