Villa Romana Is A Not to Be Missed Treasure in Sicily!

点评：We visited Villa Romana del Casale in early May 2026 on a day trip from Catania during the fifth leg of a five week visit to Sicily. Villa Romana is a somewhat remote UNESCO World Heritage site, the 4th Century A.D. remains of a Roman aristocrat’s villa. To get to Villa Romana del Casale we took an early morning Etna bus from Catania to Piazza Armerina (the closest town) in a bit less than two hours and then a shuttle to the site where we were to meet our tour group. To get the most out of our visit to Villa Romana, we had booked a two-hour small group tour with Guide Turistiche Villa Romana (through Get Your Guide), but we ended up being the only two participants that day so we had a private tour with Katia Di Dio who was a terrific guide, knowledgeable, passionate and responsive to our interests. In a nutshell, Villa Romana is a stunning archeological site, a vast multi-room structure with surviving and colourful floors made of millions of hand-cut tiles of marble and glass, as well as some surviving wall frescoes depicting life in the 4th century. The tiles are well preserved for the most part and the extent of them is almost overwhelming, in terms of both the craftsmanship (mostly slave labor) and the historical insights that they provide. Villa Romana is a not-to-be-missed treasure, certainly worth a day trip from Palermo or Catania! Based on our experience, if you are able to book a tour with Katia your visit to Villa Romana will be even more meaningful and memorable.
