Exploring the Tiny, Fortified Town of Monteriggioni
Castello Monteriggioni的点评
点评:Don’t expect a large, free-standing traditional castle here. The town itself is the castle. What you see here is a tiny but completely fortified hill-top town.
Monteriggioni was built in the 13th century as a front-line defence in Siena’s long-standing war with Florence. The town is entirely surrounded by imposing, 10 metre tall defensive walls with 14 towers.
Incredibly, it is all still standing and well-preserved. In many Italian towns, you can see chunks of ancient defensive walls or crumbling stonework, but here it all still looks like it might have in medieval times.
Even as we drove towards the town, we could see its walls and towers on the skyline, looking like a small fortress.
You can actually climb the walls and walk around the top (5€ which includes entrance to the small museum also). We had planned to do this but in the end, it was such a hot day and the walkways were so exposed that we decided not to. I was reluctant to give up on the idea because this was the main reason I was visiting Monteriggioni, but it really was too hot. If you have a choice, I'd suggest visiting on a cooler day.
