点评:During the ten days I spent in Oaxaca, our tour of Sierra Norte with Benito was easily my favorite experience. We asked for a birding tour with light hiking and a chance to learn about the culture of the Pueblos Mancomunados, and we got that and so much more. On the drive from Oaxaca to Cuajilmoloyos, Benito told us about the creation of the Pueblos Mancomunados, the history of land ownership (or lack thereof) in the state of Oaxaca, political history, crafting villages, the tourist economy, and the ecosystems of the area. While we waited for our guide along the Cañon del Coyote trail, Benito took us up into the local cemetery to see what birds we might discover. I added ten birds to my life list in that time alone! Benito knows what birds are endemic to all the microclimates of the area and spots them by ear and sight. He was so helpful to our group of newbie birders. He and Israel (our local guide) pointed out other flora and fauna of note. Did I mention the astounding views? Knowing that one of our group was a vegetarian, he also selected the BEST lunch spot of our trip: Restaurante Manos Oaxaqueñas. We ate three different mushrooms, delicious tortillas, salsas so good...my mouth is watering remembering this lunch. Since we hadn't managed to spot the red warbler on our hike, he took us home the back way via a dirt road that descended through the mountains to Teotitlán del Valle. BOOM! Red warblers! During what ended up being an 11-hour journey, Benito was a great caretaker, making sure we were doing okay in terms of energy levels, food, water. He brought bottled water, bananas, and granola bars for the group, along with some spare binoculars. Communication prior to the trip and booking were also supremely good thanks to Suzanne. Book a tour with Discover Oaxaca Tours, and you will not be sorry.
