点评:Sketchy start! Rough water with pounding surf over shallow rocks and coral.
Hard to find - there is a faded sign on Futiga Road down to a landfill. After the landfill keep left, then there is another left when you get down to a house, lots of old broken down road construction vehicles.
A man with red hair came out of the upper nice house and said I should pay him and I gave him $10, then as I got down to the smaller house and was walking down the trail a man who introduced himself as Asi who was working the taro field said that it was his land and I had to pay him $20. Was very sketchy, spoke broken English, did not seem to understand much of what I said. He sounded like a gangster from East US, said that it wasn't safe parking ( no one else was anywhere nearby), but If I gave him $20, my car would be safe and he would keep an eye out for criminals breaking into cars. It made me very nervous to leave my car with him. I should have left at that point, but gave him the rest of the cash I had, close to $20 in US and NZ currency.
I got down to the beach when nearing high tide - I don't know how anyone could access the bay at low tide. I am very experienced at ocean swimming, handling waves, snorkeling and had difficulty with the pounding surf over shallow rough rocky and coral bay floor. Once out in the clear water out of the surf, the water was a little churned up and visibility limited seeing down very far. There were strong currents nearing high tide, but nonetheless I made it across the bay. On the way back I got too close to the bluff trying to follow some visible areas of interest, (coral and fish) and got pounded into the rocks by rough surf. Be very careful in this area.
Overall, the bay floor was mostly volcanic appearing rough rocks, some limited coral, a lot of bleached out coral and a few small fish. meh
