点评:White Ladies Priory is an atmospheric medieval ruin situated just under a mile from Boscobel House. Founded in the late 12th century as an Augustinian nunnery, it takes its name from the white habits worn by the nuns who lived here. After being closed during Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536, the site passed to the Giffard family before eventually falling into ruin. Today, English Heritage maintains the site, where impressive 12th-century Norman archways and church walls still stand in a quiet, secluded grove.
The priory played a vital role in King Charles II’s escape following the Battle of Worcester in September 1651. Arriving in secret in the dead of night, the fleeing monarch took shelter here to disguise himself. It was at White Ladies that Charles II traded his royal clothes for woodcutter’s garments, cropped his hair short, and stained his face with soot before setting off toward the River Severn and nearby Boscobel.
Nice to have the place to myself, very quiet ruin
