A hidden surprise near Dorchester with great history, staff and surroundings.

点评：Visited Mapperton as part of a week break in Dorset and was thoroughly impressed with the experience. The site was highlighted to me as part of my Historic Houses membership and is a privately run estate to the west about 30 minutes drive from Dorchester. Easy access, well signed and good parking. The estate has a very impressive entrance building with a cafe and dining area leading through to the ticket desk. Toilets and baby changing available on site.
Ticket options are either scheduled time for a house tour with gardens or gardens only, the former recommended to book in advance via the website due to spaces, which was very easy. I joined the first house tour of the day at 11am with guide Peter. He was very welcoming, engaging and clearly very passionate about the history of the property, both in terms of the estate property itself and the history of the family who call Mapperton home. No photos allowed, which was a shame though it is a functioning family home with personal items on display. A tour of the house was around just under an hour, covering many areas of the house, the artwork and decor. After the house I walked the sunken gardens that were brilliant for the time of year mid-June. The Italianate gardens are spectacular along with the water gardens. A cup of tea and a bite to eat in the cafe offering hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, cakes and other snacks as standard. Reasonable prices in comparison to other private estate and National Trust properties. All in all a great few hours to see a very historic property clearly being well loved by the owners and staff. Highly recommended.
