点评:We spent a day as a family at Bays Mountain Park and Planetarium during Labor Day weekend. For only $7 per vehicle – no matter the number of people – it’s a great deal, especially for families. We specifically chose the day we visited because of the programs listed on their website, including the Sun Watch viewing. Upon arriving at the park, we found that the number of programs offered at the animal exhibits had been halved but replaced with barge rides, so we bought tickets for our chosen planetarium show and a barge tour later in the afternoon. For $6 each, the tickets are a nice add-on for those making a special trip out of the visit, but it could add up quickly for a larger group. The planetarium movie and show were of average quality, but the barge ride in the late afternoon was informative and relaxing. We also enjoyed viewing the animal habitats, especially during the turtle keeper and fox keeper talks we attended; those staff and the barge tour guide were warm and knowledgeable and open to questions.
We docked our review one star, however, because of a disappointing experience with the front desk staff re: the Sun Watch program. We had asked about that particular program when we arrived in the morning and were told to be at the dam at 3:00 p.m. In the afternoon, that time came and went, and no staff ever showed up. We even walked the length of the dam to make sure we weren’t missing them. We then had to trudge up to the nature center and inquire and were met with dismissive staff who didn’t seem to care. The woman at the desk actually looked at my spouse and said, “Is it cloudy?”, when it wasn’t, and regardless, we had been told (by her, no less) that there would be an alternative program in the planetarium if that was the case, which also wasn’t happening. A supervisor was finally called and the Sun Watch staff person found, but it left us feeling like the staff were put out about being asked to provide an advertised program. To be clear, though, the young woman who did then come out with the telescopes and filters was really nice, and we really enjoyed getting to see sunspots on the surface of the sun in real time. We hope others walking by were also able to stop and see the same.
