点评：The Unstan Cairn sits on the banks of the Stenness Loch, only a few miles from the town of Stromness. Access is via a small farm track, with only a few parking places at the end. On the day we visited the cairn was closed and a gate stopped us actually entering the cairn itself. However there were information boards relating the story and history behind the cairn. Although disappointed we did get to see the larger cousin Maeshowe. It certainly shares similarities with its larger cousin, with a long, narrow entrance passage and beautiful, intricate stonework.
The Unstan Cairn is estimated to be around 5300-year-old, predating the recently discovered settlement at the Ness of Brodgar . The Unstan Cairn is one of hundreds of burial tombs is to be found throughout Orkney, but this site near the town of Sternness is in exceptionally good condition and incredibly easy to find.
Unstan Chambered Cairn was probably built as a communal burial place. It’s an unusual example of a stalled cairn, with internal divisions or stalls, and a single side cell. The structure of Unstan Cairn from the outside looks like a smaller version of Maeshowe.
This chambered cairn boasts features of both kinds of traditional burial chambers found in Orkney. Once you're in the main chamber you'll see separate 'stalls' as well as a small, individual 'cell'. Other cairns from the Neolithic tend to feature only one or the other. Human remains were found in both sections when the cairn was first excavated, with animal bones also discovered.
Archaeologists also found beautiful Neolithic pottery too, with smashed sections of around 30 bowls excavated from the floor of the structure. The bowls were inscribed with a design which has become known as 'Unstan Ware'. Other examples of the design were also uncovered at the Knap of Howar in Papa Westray.
