点评:We visited after a trip to Knossos. Since it was off-season, we made a reservation for 4pm, 1 hour before closing. We were given a short but informative tour by the sommelier, a warm, welcoming, knowledgeable young woman named Elpita. We learned a combination of microclimates, the small and scattered plots of land, and a return to native varietals make this winery special. We also learned the winery is owned by 3 brothers, all with vastly different gifts and personalities.
The drive up to the winery is Cretan country driving. Challenging but not overwhelming if you take it slow. It's worth the trip.
The wines are unique and lovingly made. The facility has been built recently and it's inspiring to see a dream come to life. We brought back some bottles to New York to remember our trip.
We encountered difficulty upon leaving, as we listened to Google Maps and drove left (downhill) directly out of the parking lot. We ended up getting stuck on a dirt road about 600m downhill. We walked back up. One brother only spoke Greek and called another brother with a truck. That brother drove me downhill and pulled out a hook from my spare tire well, attached it to my bumper and pulled me uphill while reversing in his truck. The last brother speaks English well and checked if we were okay.
It was a fun, memorable experience. The views from the winery are incredible, coupled with unique wines and Cretan hospitality is was a perfect afternoon despite my mishap. Thanks to everyone at Manousakis!
