There is simply nothing else like Mackinac Island. In 1875, it became America's second national park, after Yellowstone, and much of the island still feels wonderfully removed from the modern world.
The famous sights are only the beginning. Visit Fort Mackinac, explore the museums and exhibits devoted to Michigan and Native American history, and then wander away from the crowds to discover the island's hidden treasures. Walk through the old graveyards, play a round at historic Wawashkamo Golf Club, listen to the clip-clop of horses, and treat yourself to a pecan fudge ball. Have a nice cold drink on the porch of the Grand Hotel while looking out over the Straits. It is difficult to imagine a finer setting.
The island is beautiful, historic, peaceful, and filled with little discoveries. Stay on the island if you can - the evenings after the day-trippers leave are especially wonderful. To save some money, stay in Mackinaw City and take the ferry back and forth.
Mackinac Island is more than a tourist attraction. It is an experience found nowhere else and, in my opinion, the greatest vacation setting in the Midwest.
