点评:As with Conwy Castle, this was one of several castles that inspired David Macaulay's book "Castle" which I was obsessed with as a child. I was thrilled to go and see the same paths that David took on his PBS special.
I was also thrilled to have gone on a weekday, in March, with "bad" weather (which is the weather I actually like), which meant it was near empty! An entire castle for about a dozen souls braving the elements.
The greatest castle that never was, indeed. This place is epic! I can't even imagine what a grand sight it must have been upon it's inception, and if only it had been completed. Nobody would dare even attempt to attack. Yet, it did change hands several times. You can almost feel the history in those old stones.
Disabled/handicapped do get free admission. Climbing the stairs to walk the walls will be challenging (I use a cane and got a real workout) and the stones will be rather precarious and uneven. There are guardrails in place, but go at your own pace and you will be fine.
