点评:Hickory Run is an enormous state park in central Pdnnsylvania. Admission and parking are free. Best to start at the visitor center which is on state route 534. The visitor center has rest rooms, staffed information desk, maps and a nice hands on interpretive center. Be sure to get a trail map if you plan on hiking. The park is very large with over 50 miles of criss-crossing trails that are not well marked in some places.
Top three must sees:
The Boulder field is a short drive from the visitor center (they have detailed driving direction sheets at the visitor center). It is a very interesting glacial remnant of a treeless boulder field. You can walk through the boulder area but I do not recommend as it can be quite tricky and some boulders are not well balanced and can move when you step on them. There is a trail that gives you a couple of differant view points.
The Shades Of Death trail. This beautiful, challenging and very popular trail starts at the visitor center. It follows a small gorge along a creek past several old dams and some very nice waterfalls. The trail starts off easy enough but gets progessively more difficult the further you go. The trail ends about 1.5 miles from the visitor center at a trailhead parking area in route 534. You can return to the visitor center the way you came or you can walk about 200 yards further west along route 534 to a paved road on the left which will take you to the Sand Springs trailhead. About 20 yards into the trail you will come to a junction, be sure to take the fork slightly left at the sign pointing to the camp ground. The trail starts quite steep and you quickly regain most of the elevation you lost on the shades trail. After the first quarter mile the trail beomes more gradual uphill and easier. About 1.25 miles in you will have to cross a small creek which we were able to rock hop but after rain you may have to wade. Right after the creek you will enter the parks campground where restrooms are available. From the campground you will cross the stone CCC dam and reconnect with shades trail and turn right to return to the visitor center. The Sand Springs trail does not have any great views but it is easier and more secluded then the shades trail.
Finally there is the Fireline trail. The Fireline trailhead parking is located 3 miles west of the visitor on the left side of route 534.
This is a short and very easy trail of 1/2 mile one way to a great view of the Lehigh river gorge.
