78 Derngate的点评
点评：I had an interesting and very enjoyable visit to 78 Derngate.
It is, as you might expect, an unusual house which will divide people along lines of taste but is undeniably striking.
It consists of an entire townhouse decorated and furnished in and early art deco style (if I have that right). The famed Charles Rennie Mackintosh was amongst those who contributed to its design.
The rooms are well supplied with information booklets and efforts have been made to furnish and accessorise each with suitable items, where originals are lacking.
There are around 10 or so art restored rooms to visit, plus a few with displays of relevant artefacts, temporary art exhibits and the like. There is a nice little tea room, decorated in keeping and a small but pretty garden.
The gift shop has some attractive and good-quality items incorporating Mackintosh designs from the house and from his broader oeuvre. There are also many books on related topics.
The staff are friendly and helpful and the £12 entry (which seemed a little pricey to me, initially) actually covers you for a full year.
A word of caution: Although I thoroughly enjoyed my visit, I had been envisaging something perhaps more grand and more intensively art deco. I would call 78 Derngate relatively modest, with small rooms and the distinctive details fairly sparsely distributed. I stress that that is not a criticism - I am just suggesting that modest expectations will be best rewarded. Don't expect a lavish wall-to-wall extravaganza - just a series of small ones!
