A Spectacular Journey Across the Alps – Beautiful, but Once Was Enough

点评：We took a full-day round trip on the Bernina Express from Chur to Tirano. The route follows the UNESCO-listed Albula and Bernina railway lines, passing through Thusis, Tiefencastel, Filisur, Bergün, Pontresina, Alp Grüm and Poschiavo before reaching Tirano in Italy. Along the way, the train crosses the famous Landwasser Viaduct and the remarkable Brusio Circular Viaduct, winds through helical tunnels and passes mountain lakes and glaciers. The highest point of the journey is Ospizio Bernina, at 2,253 metres above sea level.
The train’s panoramic windows offer sweeping views of the surrounding landscape, which changes dramatically with every metre of elevation gained – from the lush green meadows and forests in the hills above Chur to the snow and ice of the Bernina Pass, before the train descends towards the greenery and palm trees of Tirano.
Tirano is a charming town, and we thoroughly enjoyed the time we had there while waiting for our return train. We had an excellent meal at Parravicini Restaurant e Wine, which serves authentic local cuisine.
To enjoy a peaceful journey, we booked individual seats in first class so that we would not have other passengers sitting directly beside us. We were therefore quite taken aback by the inconsiderate behaviour of some passengers seated on the opposite side of the carriage during the return journey. They repeatedly stood up, leaned over us and even stumbled onto us in their efforts to take photographs through the windows on our side of the train. Eventually, we had to firmly ask them to return to their seats. It was a very unpleasant experience.
On the other hand, we greatly appreciated the friendly, helpful and attentive onboard staff, as well as the cleanliness and comfort of the train. It was certainly a very interesting and memorable experience, but we do not feel that repeating the journey on this particular route would be worth it for us.
