点评:The old town hall, Hôtel de Ville de Marseille, is one of the historic sights that you will see if you walk along the banks of the Old Port.
It’s sits directly across from the water, looking out across the port and can be easily seen from the street.
It’s a grand old building - more like a palais or chateau than a town hall. When it was built in 1673, Marseille was a thriving and prosperous maritime republic and you can see that reflected in the grandeur.
The facade is imposing, with an ornate, Baroque style. It’s all scrolls, spirals and stylized acanthus leaves.
Over-sized wooden doors are flanked by tall columns and several cherubs are perched directly above the doors. The city coat of arms sits above the main entrance and higher up, we could see a bust of Louis XIV, the Sun King.
It’s easy to spot the Hotel de Ville - it’s the one flying the all the flags.
