点评:With me being me, and wanting the 'real' experience as per 'the old days' ... I started my trip up the steps on foot covering the 45 minute up hill walk from Casemate Square to the entry gate... On the bright side, if you feel like skipping that bit, you can get a minibus up to the Jews cemetery gate (again from Casemate Square) for £40 which includes the £30 entrance to the nature reserve you will need to pay before your ascent... So it's a tenner to get up to the beginning.
From the entry gate, duck under the chain and start climbing... It's steep from the get-go, the steps are in genuinely pretty poor condition, lose stones and dust underfoot, and some vegetation overhanging here and there. The steps are also not even, some a few inches, some nearly a foot tall, the individual sets of steps are interspersed with rough footpath (usually uphill).
After taking advice (reading Trip advisor reviews) I decided to climb in the cooler early part of the day and that is sage advice. Sage advice also, is 'take a hat' which I neglected 'wear sunglasses' and 'wear stout shoes or boots' again, advice I ignored.. A quarter of the way up and I realised my footwear choice, deck shoes, qualified for dumb decision of the day... Seconded as I rounded the rock into bright hot sunlight at eye level... The lack of sun protection.
Nevertheless... Onward. A little past the half way point there's a former military lookout post... Out of the sun, fantastic view and a good spot to stop to drink and eat the water and energy bar/sandwich/cake you should have bought with you... ...Astonishingly I had actually remembered to bring both, and welcome it was too.
Onward...
by now, if you, like me, are an out of condition, over-weight hypertensive 56 year old man, you'll probably be questioning your life choices by now, and be thinking... 'No one will know if I walk back down and go home'.
DON'T ! You will know...
The last bit's steep, and uneven and knack... I mean, very tiring... But the feeling of elation as you make the last few steps, the views you will have seen and the perfect smugness you WILL feel walking down past all the people who DIDN'T do the steps and paid the full £60 came all the way up to the top in a minibus in an unmissable joy of life.
The walk down... After looking around O'Hara's battery, I took the road route back down to the entrance gate then followed my footstep back to Casemate and a very welcome cold beer with my wife who'd had the sense to stay on the patio and read her book. You could walk back down the steps, but for me... The challenge was the ascent.
