Biserica cu Lună sits right on Piața Unirii and is worth stopping for on the square alone — but the real draw is the moon mechanism in the tower. A large sphere, half gilded and half black, rotates once every 28 days to show the phase of the moon, and it has been running since the eighteenth century. Watching something that old still keeping perfect time is a lovely thing.
Inside, the church is calm and elegant, with a beautiful iconostasis and a real sense of quiet after the bustle of the square outside. It is still an active place of worship, so it feels lived-in rather than museum-like.
Free to enter, right in the middle of everything, and easily combined with a walk around Piața Unirii and along the river. A highlight of Oradea.
