点评:There are some places in the world that you see so often in photographs that you think you know what to expect — and the Giza Plateau is one of them. Then you actually arrive, and the sheer scale of it hits you.
Home to the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Khafre, the Pyramid of Menkaure and the Great Sphinx, the plateau is an incredible concentration of ancient history. Seeing these monuments in person, knowing they were built thousands of years ago, is something that photographs really can't prepare you for.
What surprised us most was just how much there is to take in beyond the famous postcard views. Walking around the plateau gives you completely different perspectives of the pyramids, and the relationship between the monuments and the surrounding modern city is fascinating.
We'd definitely recommend allowing at least half a day to explore properly. There are plenty of different viewpoints, and you'll want time to stop, take photos and actually appreciate what you're looking at rather than simply ticking off the pyramids one by one.
It can be hot, dusty and busy, particularly around the main entrances and the more popular viewpoints, so take plenty of water and give yourself time. Having a good guide can also make a big difference, particularly when it comes to understanding the history behind what you're seeing rather than simply looking at enormous piles of stone.
And yes, there are plenty of people trying to sell souvenirs, camel rides and other experiences around the plateau, so expect some attention and be prepared to politely say no if you're not interested.
But despite all of that, there's something incredibly special about standing on the Giza Plateau. These are monuments that have fascinated people for centuries, and seeing them with your own eyes really does put their age and scale into perspective.
Our verdict: An absolutely unforgettable part of visiting Egypt. It can be busy, hot and chaotic at times, but standing among the pyramids and Sphinx is an experience that lives up to the reputation.
