点评：Meaningful monument dedicated to the lost souls of the 1935 Hurricane, and containing a crypt with skeletal remains and cremains. We were glad we paused to pay our respects, contemplating the harrowing experience and carnage the hurricane left in its wake. Worth studying the well-done placards. We read the book Last Train to Paradise which is also a wonderful way to introduce yourself to the Keys and goes into great detail about the hurricane and the prior building of the railroad. There’s a great website that has historical info and links (but TA would not allow me to post its name so just Google historical markers in the keys and hopefully you can find it), and we also paid our respects (based on that website author’s helpful notes) at the nearby Pioneer Cemetery which has some original settlers buried right on the beach. It’s registered as a National historic marker so even though you have to walk through the Cheeca resort grounds (and see how the 1% live!), you are able to visit the very small cemetery and reflect. Google maps shows you how to walk through the parking lots and stay to the right, making the almost last left. At the entry to cheeca, you can stay to the left on the pedestrian path.
