Armenian Apostolic Holy Church Mother See Holy Etchmiadzin的点评
点评：We continued from Yerevan to the spiritual capital of the country, Echmiadzin. This was the site of the first cathedral being founded here, in 301AD, by St Gregory the Illuminator when the kingdom adopted Christianity. The current church dates from the 5th century but has had extensive restorations in the post Soviet period. The entrance was a grand Soviet style monumental gateway depicting the king and the saint.
I left Galust to talk and walked around the complex. The cathedral is quite magnificent and unlike so many European cathedrals, has extensive grounds so you can actually appreciate the building without it being crowded in by other buildings. The gardens were pretty and being a Sunday the area was busy.
The interior of the cathedral looked more Persian than Christian with beautiful geometric designs but no animals or people depicted other than on detached paintings. Sadly I couldn't take photos inside. The building was busy with worshippers which was also nice to see.
