点评:Mount Rigi, known as the Queen of the Mountains, is located in the heart of Switzerland. Visitors can reach this attraction through aerial cable cars and cogwheel trains and it's worth noting that Mount Rigi could be accessed by mountain railway as long ago as 1871. Taking the railway allows you to observe the beautiful lake Lucerne, peacefully grazing cows, traditional farms, and gorgeous wild meadows.
We reached the mountain by taking a boat cruise on lake Lucerne, then taking the train and on the way back we walked down to Rigi Kaltbad where we took the cable car to Weggis, then the boat back to Lucerne. We really enjoyed the lake and the railway as the scenery was stunning, but I can't comment on the cable car as I'm afraid of heights so I closed my eyes for the entirety of the cable car trip.
During the summer visitors can enjoy around 120 km of trails, while in winter they can ski, snowboard or explore the mountain through snowshoeing. We didn't do a lot of hiking as we travelled from Basel to the mountain so we didn't have a lot of time, but we did enjoy the walk from the top of the mountain to Rigi Kaltbad.
A Rigi Day Pass & Boat Trip Lucerne (Return), which grants you a free return boat journey between Lucerne and Vitznau and unlimited Rigi railway travel, can cost as little as 68.50 Swiss francs but it can also go up to as high as 137 francs. As we were travelling from Basel, we got a Day Swiss Pass which I believe cost us around £75 per person. The pass granted us free travel on most Swiss trains, including the Rigi mountain train, and free travel on the Rigi Kaltbad-Weggis cable car. It was definitely worth getting the pass as we didn't have to worry about booking multiple tickets for the boat, railway and cable car, so I suggest you do some research before deciding what ticket to get.
You'll probably need at least half a day to properly enjoy the trip from Lucerne to Mount Rigi so make sure you give yourself enough time. It may be expensive to get there (like most things in Switzerland) but it's worth it! However, if you don't want to take my word for it, maybe you'll trust the great American writer Mark Twain who wrote the following about Mount Rigi in his book A Tramp Abroad:
"In a moment we were deeply absorbed in the marvel before us, and dead to everything else. The great cloud-barred disk of the sun stood just above a limitless expanse of tossing white-caps--so to speak--a billowy chaos of massy mountain domes and peaks draped in imperishable snow, and flooded with an opaline glory of changing and dissolving splendors, while through rifts in a black cloud-bank above the sun, radiating lances of diamond dust shot to the zenith. The cloven valleys of the lower world swam in a tinted mist which veiled the ruggedness of their crags and ribs and ragged forests, and turned all the forbidding region into a soft and rich and sensuous paradise.
We could not speak. We could hardly breathe. We could only gaze in
drunken ecstasy and drink in it.”
