点评:I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve walked through the doors of Melbourne’s Royal Exhibition Building, right next to the modern @melbournemuseum\.
Baby shows, motor shows, craft markets, my daughter Indi’s graduation and all sorts of events in between\. I’ve wandered its enormous timber floors, probably spending more time looking at what was on display than the building itself\.
But this visit was different\. I signed up for a guided tour, and it was well worth it\.
Built for the Melbourne International Exhibition in 1880, this magnificent building hosted the opening of Australia’s first Federal Parliament in 1901 and became Australia’s first UNESCO World Heritage\-listed building in 2004\.
Not bad for a building that’s been entertaining Melburnians for nearly 150 years\.
This time I climbed to the dome promenade for a completely different perspective of Melbourne\.
On one side, the beautiful Carlton Gardens with their fountains, sweeping lawns and established trees\. On the other, the modern Melbourne Museum and city skyline\. I loved the contrast between the ornate 19th\-century architecture and the glass skyscrapers of modern Melbourne\.
And because it was Saturday, I played a little game of “spot the bride and groom” having their wedding photographs taken in the gardens below\. Look closely at my photos and you might spot a few\!
Inside, the intricate ceiling paintings, colours and extraordinary craftsmanship had me wondering how many times I’d walked beneath them without really looking up\.
I’ve certainly been guilty of it\.
There’s something rather special about rediscovering a place you’ve known for years and realising there’s still so much you haven’t seen\.
Sometimes being a tourist in your own town (TIYOT) is just as rewarding as travelling halfway around the world\.
And Melbourne certainly has a few stories to tell.
