Heale Gardens的点评
点评：Friday 11th September 2026, My husband and drove up to just above Salisbury to go to the village of Middle Woodford to go to visit Heale House Gardens.
Heale House was built in the latter part of the sixteenth century by Sir William Greene. The house was given to his daughter and son-in-law, Sir Gerald Errington, in 1553 as a wedding present. Passing from them into the hands of Lawrence Hyde of Hatch and given again as a wedding present to his son, the house was considerably enlarged, covering very much the same area as it does today.
In 1894, the Hon Louis Greville set about restoring the house and gardens employing Harold Peto from nearby Iford Manor to redesign parts of the garden. Not all of the garden plans were used, but his influence can be seen in the Italianate terrace overlooking the river. Greville also bought a tea house and bridge over from Japan to add to the garden which can still be seen today.
My husband and I entered the gate into the gardens and walked through a fruit orchard, which led to a walled garden growing fruit and flowers, there was an ornamental pool with lily’s in the centre of the garden. We found a bench and sat for a while and a lovely stripy tiger cat came past.
We then left here by a wrought iron decorative gate and went into the Japanese Garden with its red oriental bridge and tea house overlooking a flowing stream. We then strolled along the water meadows with the river Avon flowing through and the sun glinting on the water; it was such a pretty and peaceful sight.
We then walked round this very fine house into its formal garden with round ball clipped yews and grasses and along the terrace, the paths lined with lavender bushes. We strolled round to the side of the house and found steps down to a little nitch by the river with a bench where we sat for a while and listening to the water babbling by. I found inspiration here and I wrote a poem called ‘Memories of Yesterday’.
My husband and I took lots of photographs of this lovely garden as we strolled round.
