点评:We were in Basel for three days and we walked along the Rhine most of those days. The riverfront on both sides has interesting sights and views. We took a ferry across the river. One striking thing we noticed as we walked along the Rhine or crossed bridges over the Rhine or sat on the concrete seats next to the Rhine were the number of people floating down it. Most people used a fish-shaped waterproof bag called Wickelfisch. We had seen these at the Tourist Office on our first visit there. Inspired by these sights I checked various websites and an alternative shop nearby and decided they were much of a muchness so we went to the Tourist Office again and bought one. It's a good souvenir and we sail so a wet bag is useful.
We traipsed down to the Rhine on our last morning with our swimming clothes underneath and found a convenient beachy spot near Wettsteinbruke, then put in our outer clothes in the Wickelfisch, rolled the top 6 (or 7) times, held onto it and walked into the water and let the current take us down to just after Mittlere Brücke where you can use the steps to come out. It is possible to start and finish further apart - there are clear delimitations of where you can do this on a map and also by looking at the buoys. I actually did a shorter stretch so I could take photos of my husband. Just before Mittlere Brücke is a photo point. You put up your hand and wave and then you can download the photos (I think for free). Unfortunately for us that was starting up in the second week of August and we were too early.
The afternoon would have been better because then it would have been warmer and given us more time but we wanted to go back and shower at our hotel before departing Basel for Budapest. More people do this in the afternoon too. Some hints: Officially swimming aids are not allowed, and you can't use the Wickelfisch as a swim aid either so don't tie them to your body. No guarantee that electronics won't get wet so either double bag them or don't take them or alternate who swims. Swim shoes are recommended because getting to the river can be hard on the feet as is coming out. It can be slippery coming out. Navigate carefully around bridges as there can be eddies. You don't jump off bridges. At Mittlere Brücke I had to detour around a water taxi moored there and you should watch out for boats in general. Stay within the buoys. I didn't see any changing rooms but I did see people carefully getting into their outer clothes while taking off their swimsuits underneath. We just put on some tops and dresses and stayed damp. Despite all these warnings we had no problems and it was a real Basel thing to do!
