点评:Islamic Cairo isn't really somewhere you visit for one particular attraction, it's an area you explore. And for us, that's what makes it so interesting.
Wandering through the narrow streets and alleyways, you'll find centuries-old mosques, historic gates, madrasas, markets and traditional buildings sitting alongside the everyday life of modern Cairo. One minute you're walking past an incredible piece of Islamic architecture, and the next you're watching locals going about their daily business.
Some of the highlights include Al-Azhar Mosque, Al-Hakim Mosque, Sultan Hassan Mosque and the Citadel, while the famous Khan Al-Khalili Bazaar sits right on the edge of the historic area. But we'd actually recommend allowing yourself some time to simply wander between the main sights rather than rushing from one attraction to another.
The architecture is incredible, particularly when you start looking upwards. Ornate doorways, stone carvings, domes and minarets appear around seemingly every corner, and there's a huge amount of history packed into a relatively small area. Just be mindful of the scooters flying past!
It can also be chaotic. The streets can be busy, traffic is everywhere, and some parts feel very touristy, particularly around Khan Al-Khalili. But move a little further away from the main tourist routes and you'll start to see a much more everyday side of Cairo.
We'd recommend visiting with a rough itinerary of the main sights, but leaving plenty of room for spontaneity. Some of our favourite moments came from simply walking around and seeing what we found.
If you're interested in history, architecture and getting beyond the obvious Cairo attractions, we think Islamic Cairo is one of the most rewarding areas of the city to explore.
Our verdict: Don't treat Islamic Cairo as a checklist of attractions. Take your time, walk the streets, look up and soak up the atmosphere. It's busy and chaotic at times, but that's all part of experiencing this incredible historic part of Cairo.
