"Kilimanjaro was everything they said it would be — and more"

点评：We'd tried to book Kilimanjaro twice before and backed out both times over budget. This time we didn't cut corners, and I'm so glad we didn't.
We flew into Kilimanjaro Airport and spent two nights at the Maridadi Hotel before setting off, which gave us time to shake off jet lag, meet the rest of our group, and get a proper briefing on what the next week would involve. Jack Fleckney, who owns Legend Expeditions, sat with us himself and talked us through everything — no vague promises, just a clear plan and someone who clearly knows the mountain and cares about getting it right.
We went up via the Machame route. Our guides knew the mountain inside out — they read the weather, paced us properly, and never once made us feel rushed or behind. The porters were incredible: singing at camp every evening, carrying gear we couldn't imagine lifting, and somehow still finding the energy to check in on how we were doing.
What stood out most was the small stuff. Hot water waiting for us at camp. A cook who adjusted meals when one of us wasn't feeling great at altitude. A crew that quietly kept things running so all we had to focus on was putting one foot in front of the other. It's clear that ethos comes straight from the top — you can tell Jack has built this company around actually looking after people, not just ticking a box.
Summit night was brutal, as it should be, but having a team you trust completely made all the difference. We didn't all make the very top, and that's worth saying — a mountain like this doesn't care how much you paid, and any operator promising a guaranteed summit isn't being straight with you. What Legend Expeditions did give us was the best possible shot, and the safety net to make smart calls if we needed to.
We added on a few days of safari afterwards, which was the perfect way to unwind — sore legs and all.
If you're deciding between operators, don't just compare prices. Ask about guide-to-client ratios, altitude protocols, and what happens if someone needs to turn back. We asked Jack and his team all of that before booking, and every answer held up on the mountain.
