点评:We visited Cattedrale di Monreale on a day trip trom Palermo during the second leg of a five week visit to Sicily in April 2026. This magnificent twelfth century UNESCO World Heritage structure is located in the town of Monreale less than ten kilometres from the historic centre of Palermo. We took local bus #389 bus from Piazza Indipendenza (just behind the Norman Palace) to Monreale (which took about 40 minutes with traffic) and then took a short shuttle ride up to the Cathedral area. We first stopped for a quick al fresco lunch at nearby La Bodeguita dei Sapori (reviewed separately) while waiting for the Cathedral to reopen. The exterior of the Cattedral is quite imposing and its immense interior overwhelmed us with its stunning illustrative mosaic tiles (depicting many familiar biblical stories) and its abundance of gold leaf ornamentation. We spent about 45 minutes in the Cathedral itself and then made our way to the nearby cloister to enjoy its peaceful garden. At the end of our visit we planned to take the bus back to Palermo, but noticed a taxi stand just outside the Cathedral and and shared the taxi fare with another couple to return directly to the Norman Palace area in Palermo.
