点评:I decided to take a new direction in life and enrol on an AFF course at Sky-high Skydiving in Peterlee, County Durham, as this was my most local drop zone being based in Newcastle. What a mistake I made.
If you jump as a tandem skydiver, they are completely different to if you are someone who wishes to learn, because they make more money off tandem skydivers than those who do AFF courses. Tandems, I have seen with my own eyes, are laughed with, welcomed, fun is shared and the day is a beautiful one. If you wish to learn, you are treated like dirt from day one, Ground School.
The learning they give you is incredible. They are very good coaches, but as people they do not live up to those expectations. You have your Ground School day, pass a quick exam, then it's up to the weather. I went in August 2026, luckily my first time was good weather, but many others had waited days or weeks due to clouds, winds, or the fact the place is barely open.
You are lucky as AFF if you have them open on weekends, let alone during the week, they close for any reason.
The coaches were quite military, but I didn't mind that as we are entering a dangerous sport. Sometimes it was tense, but you must make split second decisions in the air and I respected that. However, they are not welcoming at all. Since August, I have tried to speak to seasoned professionals, those with A, B, C, D licences and they are very cold to you. They tell you to speak to AFF coaches if you ask any questions, but the AFF coaches have no time as they are thrown in the air every jump to make money from tandems. If you stop an AFF coach for a question, you're told to wait and then they forget to come back to you.
The Chief instructor is not a welcoming person at all. I have seen him on two occasions shouting, swearing and screaming at his staff and students, which even if they need telling off, is rude and unprofessional. Has this man ever had someone stand up to him, to lead by example and show what a welcoming, inclusive environment should look like? He was truly awful and so I never interacted with him out of choice
The skydiving world is not a nice, warm one. If you want to jump solo and enjoy it yourself, then endure the AFF levels and pass quickly, learn what you need and get your A-Licence. It really can be done quickly. I have decided to never return to Sky-High Skydiving as the culture is abysmal, led by the dreadful chief instructor, who is responsible for leading behaviour and culture and fails within a moment of witnessing him.
It is a clique, the skydiving world, and there are no open spaces. My fellow new AFF students led by example themselves, with one of them creating a social media community for the new students to chat and discuss their AFF journeys, as when you are added to social media communities for Sky-High, you are told never to speak to them about this, that, or personally. Only use this to book your next jumps, but they will soon message you to say you owe money! If you are in the clique, your face will fit the clique, but they are just recreating a schoolground system where everyone just laughs at the others because they are not as experienced, or asking stupid questions. When you learn something new, you should ask all questions, stupid or not.
I regret joining Sky-high skydiving for my AFF journey, not skydiving itself. I am now much happier at a farther, but more welcoming, no-clique led, inclusive cultured drop zone, who treat people as friends, not hindrances or to be gossiped at like at Sky-High.
Very sad.
