点评：Before I-75 was built, the only way to reach St. Petersburg, Florida was to drive along U.S. Route 19 from Tallahassee. That's how our family discovered Weeki Wachee Springs, a natural tourist attraction where underwater performances by "mermaids," women wearing fish tails as well as other fanciful outfits, could be viewed in an aquarium-like setting in the spring of the Weeki Wachee River. Located at 6131 Commercial Way in Spring Hill, at the intersection of U.S. Route 19 and State Road 50, 55 miles north of St. Petersburg, it opened in 1947 and our family stopped to see a show while vacationing in 1949. This year, 77 years later, I decided to stop at Weeki Wachee and other old tourist attractions along U.S. Route 19 on my way back to Chicago after vacationing in Sarasota. Imagine my surprise, and my delight, when I discovered that Weeki Wachee now is part of a state park that also features a waterpark, Buccaneer Bay, which opened in 1982 with water slides, river boat rides, kayak and paddleboard rental, a lazy river and a white sand beach. The "mermaid" show at Weeki Wachee Springs is as popular as ever. Like most visitors, I always wonder how they are able to stay underwater for so long. Meanwhile, the spring as become famous for another reason. In 2007, cave divers were able to gain entry into the cave system at the spring and explore to a depth of 407 feet, making Weeki Wachee springs the deepest known freshwater cave in the United States. The park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.
