点评:Ghent is a beautiful, charming medieval city with vibrant canals, excellent food, and
friendly locals but I'm writing this review to warn fellow travellers about a costly
surprise I nearly missed.
WHAT HAPPENED TO ME:
I drove my diesel car (Audi Q5, 2020) into Ghent without knowing about the Low Emission
Zone (LEZ) pre-registration requirement. I received a €185 fine for the violation. Only
after contesting the fine did I learn I could have paid just €75 for late registration,
or even better - €0 if I'd pre-registered before arrival.
THE CRITICAL WARNING:
Each Belgian city has its OWN Low Emission Zone. If you're driving to Ghent from
Brussels, Antwerp, Amsterdam or anywhere else, you MUST pre-register separately for
Ghent. Your Brussels registration does NOT cover Ghent. Your Antwerp registration
does NOT cover Ghent.
WHY THIS MATTERS:
• **Fine amount**: €150 - €350 depending on violation severity
• **Processing time**: Pre-registration takes up to 14 days
• **No advance notice**: Signage at Ghent's entry points does NOT clearly warn foreign drivers that pre-registration is required
• **Your GPS won't tell you**: Standard navigation apps and travel guides don't mention this requirement
HOW TO AVOID THE FINE:
BEFORE YOU TRAVEL:
1. Visit lez.vlaanderen.be at least 14 days before you arrive
2. Check if your vehicle meets the Euro emissions standard:
– Euro 5+ for diesel vehicles
– Euro 2+ for petrol vehicles
– Euro 0 for certain older/specialty vehicles
3. Pre-register your vehicle (FREE if compliant)
4. Save your registration confirmation
IF YOU ARRIVE WITHOUT PRE-REGISTERING:
1. You have 30 days to request late registration
2. Email: gent@taxaris.de
3. Include your vehicle registration certificate
4. Late registration fee: €75 (vs. €185+ fine)
5. Act IMMEDIATELY: the 30-day window is strict
THE FRUSTRATION:
• Ghent's LEZ signage is vague, it says "LEZ Zone" but doesn't explicitly tell foreign drivers that pre-registration is mandatory
• No day-pass option exists (unlike some European cities)
• The system is stricter for foreigners; Belgian and Dutch vehicles are automatically in the database
• Late registration exists, but you must know to ask for it within 30 days
MY EXPERIENCE WITH CONTESTING:
I successfully argued that my 30-day deadline should run from when I RECEIVED the fine (end of July), not when it was sent (July 7). Ghent agreed and accepted my late
registration at €75. This took persistence and clear communication, but it worked.
BOTTOM LINE:
Ghent is genuinely lovely; the food, architecture, and nightlife are all excellent. But PLEASE spend 10 minutes before you leave home checking lez.vlaanderen.be. It could save you €185+.
**For foreign drivers: Don't assume your registration in another city covers Ghent.
Check separately. Register early. Avoid the fine.**
1. 您有30天的时间申请 tardy registration(延迟注册)
2. 发送邮件至:gent@taxaris.de
• 根特的低排放区标识模糊不清,虽然上面写着“低排放区”,但并未明确告知外国司机必须提前注册;
• 没有日票选项(这与欧洲其他一些城市不同);
• 该系统对外国司机的要求更为严格;比利时和荷兰的车辆则自动被录入数据库;
vlaanderen.be。
