Wow—what a find! Wheathampstead Golf Village is clearly set up primarily for golfers, but you do not need to play golf or be a member to use the café.
I ordered a ham and cheese toastie, while my friend chose the full English breakfast. I was expecting something fairly average, but I can say without fear of contradiction that this was the best toastie I have ever eaten. It contained proper thick-cut ham—clearly within snouting distance of a good butcher—and the sandwich was toasted in that delicious American style. I was rather glad there was no calorie count: the cheese was wonderfully plentiful, as were the chips.
Everything tasted freshly cooked from scratch, with no sense of reheated or microwaved food.
The staff were exceptionally friendly and attentive. They were also wonderfully kind to my dog and did not flinch when I asked for the condiments to be brought promptly—a particular bugbear of mine in other cafés!
This was an incredibly lucky discovery and I strongly recommend it. I can already see myself becoming at least a weekly visitor. In fact, I’m in rather a hurry to go back.
