点评：Saintes was a big town during the Roman rule in France, think Asterix & Obelix times. This amphi theatre has been flooded, used as farmland and now has been cleaned up to visit and it’s now also used for concerts. It was nice to see, with clear panels explaining what you see. At the reception (accueil) you can get English and other language translations of the panels. It was nicely done, with some details to get a feel, especially how the Romans built the arches, with a maquette for you to try as well. It had special features for children as well. The reception area doubles as a shop/café where you can get tea (coffee machine grinder part was broken), and some small items. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable, we spoke about some of the details, such as the animals used and what traces had been found. Tip: park at the Place du 11 Novembre (Cours Reversaux) parking lot (not on Tuesdays and Friday mornings 7-13:00 hrs because of the market), then follow the green line on the ground. The green line is a tourist route (balade) through Saintes. This parking is free and you can also walk up to the centre from the parking lot. Note however, this green route to the amphi theatre takes you through a park with steps and unpaved path, and it’s a bit of a walk (when it’s hot, it feels like a long walk). There are a number of parking spaces in front of the place with a ramp for wheelchairs and strollers, so a better option for some.
