点评:An article by four scholars from various Sri Lankan universities and institutes, published in the scientific journal "Civil Engineering and Architecture" (2017), proposed hypotheses regarding the actual appearance of the Royal Palace of Polonnaruwa (Vijayanta Prasada).
Among other things, they wrote: “The chronicles *Chulawansa* [presumed to date from the 13th century; editor's note] and *Mahawansa* describe the palace as a seven-story building with a thousand chambers. Although the main building could not possibly accommodate such a number of rooms, when considering the entire palace complex, this figure seems plausible”.
In any case, it was a vast complex; unfortunately, only partial ruins of the three lower brick stories remain. These levels show evidence of large openings in the walls designed to house the beams that supported the upper floors.
Like the adjacent Council Chamber and countless other buildings in Polonnaruwa, the palace was commissioned by King Parakramabahu I the Great (1153–1186).
Tragically, as a symbol of royal power — and thus a prime target — the palace was set ablaze in 1215 by the invader Kalinga Magha. This explains the disparity between the structure's original scale and its relatively modest remains.
