点评:We visited the Maxine & Jesse Whitney museum whilst in port in Valdez on a cruise.
The overall size of the venue which houses the Whitney collection is compact as museums go, but the space has been well thought out and there is a wealth of exhibits displayed without you ever feeling that the space is cramped or crowded.
The collection of Native Alaskan art and artefacts is stunning, not only for the breadth of items displayed but the artistry involved creating such things with difficult and, I am sure, often sparse, resources.
The taxidermy of the Alaskan animals is superb; a mountain lion clings to a mountain side, ready to pounce, a brown bear stretches up to steal honey from a beehive and the polar bear and the moose? Well, they just need to stand up because they are huge, impressive just by their sheer size.
A well thought out display is by the entrance to the exhibit space with examples of all the different furs from the animals, inviting visitors to stroke these samples, rather than the exhibits.
Definitely a must see if you ever find yourself in Valdez.
