点评:Have been at the coast for a few days so decided to stop off on the way home for a snack at Scampston Hall Cafe. Initially not massively clear how to get your food and pay. There appeared to be two counters one to get hot food and another one to get drinks then you pick your cakes of a table in the middle. We decided on two scones one cheese and one fruit. They appeared huge and looked lovely. You could choose a scone and if you wanted butter and jam for an extra cost and cream was also more. We had butter and jam. We also ordered 1 hot chocolate and 1 tea. The young lady behind the counter obligingly warmed my cheese scone up. The drinks were good and the tea came in a little pot with milk and the hot chocolate was tasty. The cheese scone was good as well, not the most tasty one i have ever had but good and you could choose for more money to have a small jar of chutney with it .
But although the fruit scone looked good it was really difficult to cut in half as was so dense and dry. (See photos) We had to cut it i to 3 parts and add lots of butter and jam to be able to make it moist and eat it. We got another small jar of jam as 1 jar did not make it moist enough to swallow. Also we counted 6 small currants in the huge scone which didn't help.
After 10 minutes the nice young lady who had served us came over to the table and looked really uncomfortable and stated that the extra jam we had took was a chargeable item and she had been sent over to tell us this. I explained we actually required it to make the scone soft enough to consume , she looked really awkward and said she will talk to her manager. She did not return . My companion was facing the counter and felt the other staff were glancing over after obviously talking about the situation. I noticed this as well. No one else came over which is not great management as whoever was in charge that day had sent the poor young woman over to challenge us . When we explained our actions . I feel this should have been dealt with in a more professional way with someone more senior coming over to ask if there was an issue. I had no problem at all paying for the jam i used but had no choice to moisten the scone. We always leave £4 tip anyway but didnt that day as it was an uncomfortable experience. The reason why i gave 3 stars , as i review fairly are the drinks cheese scone were good also because of the unfortunate, lovely young lady who was sent over when it should have been someone more senior. I would also suggest putting more fruit in your scones and making less dry, if you want to charge nearly £5 a scone they need to taste as good as they looked.
We wont be back but would suggest around the corner from Scampston was another little tea room which we will try and hope we have a much better experience.
