Charming, rather eclectic and slightly ramshackle house

点评：We visited the house during the August open days. Inside there are several rooms to view on two floors. The interiors are interesting with a large assortment of collections of Roman and Egyptian artefacts, fossils, rocks, ceramics and many other curios. There is also a good selection of books that can be read about local archaeology, houses and history, plus photo albums of the house restoration and the excavation of the Roman villa, which has sadly been reburied to preserve it. The house is not the most tidy or organised, but is presented in a lived in condition. There is not much background information provided in the rooms to be read about the house or its owners over the centuries - you have to buy the guide book for more information.
The gardens are pleasant but do not appear very well-maintained - bordered by lots of brambles and nettles!
The small tea room is a nice addition which you often don't get with smaller houses still lived in by the family. It was great to meet Lucy and Hugo and we had a good conversation about a number of subjects, including how challenging it is to stay on top of maintenance of such houses!
There was one thing which soured the visit for me and is the reason I am only giving 3 stars. Acting as a barrier across the stairs to the upper floor was a totally out of place and rather tragic political banner in support of Palestine. I visit HHA properties as I am interested in the houses and their history, the people who have owned and cared about them, the architecture, interiors and furniture etc. I do not appreciate having political opinion shoved in my face - that is what I expect at National Trust properties! Sorry to bring this up, but it was so unnecessary and annoying.
