点评:We stopped off on the way back from Cornwall, because no trip is complete without a sudden, unplanned detour dictated by a sat nav with a sick sense of humor. Before arriving into a spacious car park that uses RingGo—because even middle-of-nowhere industrial history demands you register your license plate on a clunky app—we went up some nice hills, blissfully unaware of the logistical tragedy awaiting us.
That tragedy was the Grand Weston Canal. Somebody had a vision to build a canal from Devon to Bristol, but it failed in on the second word. It ended somewhere around here, leaving behind a half-baked ditch (ok future tourist attraction) and a lot of broken dreams. But hey, now there’s an excellent visitor centre with games to play and info boards! Through the magic of interactive displays, you learn that the entire operation boiled down to three things: horses, riots, and lime.
Naturally, we inspected the facilities. The toilets only faintly smelled of wee, which, by British roadside standards, is basically a five-star spa experience and was thoroughly welcome anyway.
Refreshed, relieved, and fully educated on 19th-century waterway blunders, we piled back into the car, and headed back up those same nice hills—still on the way back from Cornwall.
