点评:Interesting gardens as there was a great variety of Champion trees and different environments to explore within a relatively small area; walled gardens, herbaceous borders, rose garden, wild flower meadow, arboretum, salt marsh and salt marsh woodland. Also good to see new trees being planted and added to the collection.
Despite being a relatively small area, it is a huge task to maintain such varied environments and whilst the main parts of the gardens were being looked after, the woodland areas felt that they were being swamped by the now considered invasive Laurel, and the known invasive, Rhododendron ponticum. There was certainly no open pond dipping area as the signs would indicate.
I would suggest that as an RHS partner garden, that there would be a host of volunteers willing to assist with garden and woodland work to help the family achieve their goal. Also the RHS bursary provides funds for labelling, which could help the visitor identify the magnificent champion trees.
Ultimately, all kudos to the family who are obviously invested in enabling these gardens to survive and thrive. The entry fee is a really good deal to get into an RHS partner garden, and if you are a member, your entry is covered anyway!
