Stockport Museum的点评
点评：Stockport Museum is housed within an old building, with exposed wooden beams, original features and newer metal supports incorporated into the structure. The building itself is fascinating, with multiple floors and glimpses of the original street and stonework beneath the modern museum.
The museum is spread across several exhibition floors, with the ground level giving an excellent overview of Stockport’s history. It takes you back around 900 years, exploring the development of the town and the old buildings and streets that once stood here.
Going further down, the museum takes you back much further — around 5,000 years of civilisation in the area, including the Neolithic period. There are archaeological artefacts and objects showing how people lived and worked in the region, together with displays explaining the production and use of various items.
One particularly enjoyable exhibition was “The Stockport Collection: Portrait of a Community, 1976–77” by Heidi Alexander. Alexander had visited Stockport while on holiday and captured a series of snapshots of people and everyday life around the market. I thought these were particularly charming and brought the recent history of the town to life. There is also a video explaining the exhibition, and a book about the collection is available in the museum shop.
There are changing exhibitions too, and the museum is accessible by lift for visitors who need it.
The local history section covers some fascinating aspects of Stockport’s development, including its industrial heritage and the importance of straw hat manufacturing, which was once one of the largest industries in the country. There are displays exploring the production of hats and their importance to the local economy.
The lower levels move into archaeology, while there is also a dedicated family gallery and spaces designed for children, with interactive activities and exhibitions aimed at younger visitors.
Overall, this is a really worthwhile museum if you want to understand Stockport beyond its modern town centre. The combination of the historic building, archaeology, local industry, social history and changing exhibitions makes it much more interesting than you might initially expect.
Best of all, admission is free, making it an easy place to spend an hour or two, particularly if you are interested in local history or visiting with children.
