点评:We had an absolutely outstanding morning with Ho Tram Tours and our guide, Binh (Wombat), on a tour of Nui Dat and Long Tan exploring the Australian experience of the Vietnam War.
We were collected from the Meliá Ho Tram Resort and first visited a local market, where we purchased flowers to later place at the memorials at Nui Dat and Long Tan. Binh took us around the market, explaining the local produce, customs and traditions. This was a wonderful introduction to the area and its people.
From there, we visited Nui Dat, the former home of the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF). Binh brought the history to life as we explored SAS Hill, the former runways, the locations of the battalions accommodation, the Music Bowl and the memorial at the old base flagpole. His explanations of what the base looked like during the war compared with what remains today were fascinating.
We then travelled to Long Tan, where we paid our respects at the Long Tan Cross and placed our flowers. One of the most meaningful moments was Binh reciting the Ode of Remembrance, followed by a recording of the Last Post and Rouse being sounded. It was a very respectful and moving experience.
We also visited a memorial commemorating local people who served and died with the Viet Cong, explored the Long Phuoc tunnels, and enjoyed a delicious local lunch of broken rice with chicken/pork and seaweed soup. On the way back to the resort, we stopped at the recently completed memorial to the NVA D455 Regiment, adding another perspective to the history of the area.
I thought I already knew quite a lot about Nui Dat and Long Tan, but Binh taught us so much more. His knowledge, friendliness, respect for the history and ability to explain both the Australian and Vietnamese perspectives made the tour incredibly special.
This was far more than simply visiting historical sites, it was an experience that gave us a deeper understanding of the people, places and events surrounding the Vietnam War, and one we will remember for a very long time.
A huge thank you to Binh (Wombat) and Ho Tram Tours. Highly recommended to anyone interested in the history of Nui Dat and Long Tan. An exceptional guide and an unforgettable experience.
