点评：The Meems Bottom Covered Bridge is the largest remaining covered bridge still in use in Virginia, stretching 204 feet in a single span carried by the famous wooden Burr Truss Arch-style. Located a few miles south of Mount Jackson on US Route 11, the historic Valley Pike, the wooden bridge was built in 1892 by Franklin Hiser Wissler over the North Fork of the Shenandoah River to provide access to his apple orchards at Strathmore Farms. The current bridge, which features a 200-foot single-span wooden Burr Truss Arch structure, is the fourth formally recorded bridge at this location. The bridge was the site of a Civil War engagement. In a pre-dawn raid on October 3, 1864, Confederate Captain John McNeill led a small force of Confederate rangers against Union troopers of the 8th Ohio Cavalry Regiment guarding Meems Bottom, the bridge to Mount Jackson, a strategic crossing on the Valley Pike. The attack lasted only 15 minutes with most of the Union cavalry captured but McNeill, one of the best known Confederate raiders, was mortally wounded. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
