点评:I had been thinking about visiting Iraq for quite a long time, and finally made the trip from the United States. It turned out to be one of those trips that was completely different from what I had imagined before going.
Even before arriving there was a little adventure with the visa. As a US citizen I found out that I needed to arrange my Iraq visa before traveling rather than getting it on arrival. I tried another application website first and couldn’t get it to work, then eventually used evisairaq.com and received my visa in around 8 hours. After that I could finally stop worrying about the paperwork and concentrate on the trip.
I landed in Baghdad and spent some time exploring the city before traveling south. Baghdad is a fascinating place, especially if you are interested in history, but for me the biggest surprise in Iraq was the people.
The hospitality is difficult to explain until you experience it yourself. Many times I would start a conversation with somebody or simply ask a question and suddenly I was being offered tea, food or help with something. People were genuinely curious about where I came from and seemed very happy that an American had come to visit their country.
Later I traveled down to Basra, and I am really happy I included it in the trip. Basra has a completely different feeling from Baghdad. There is so much history in southern Iraq, but I also enjoyed just seeing normal life, walking around, eating local food and talking with people.
What stayed with me the most was how welcoming everyone was. Before coming to Iraq I was thinking mainly about places I wanted to see, but after the trip most of the stories I found myself telling friends back home were about people I met along the way.
After Basra I flew to Erbil and finished my journey there. Doing Baghdad first, then Basra and finally Erbil worked very well for my trip and also gave me a chance to see very different sides of Iraq.
Iraq has incredible historical places, great food and a lot to see, but the hospitality was easily the part I will remember most. I came home with a very different picture of the country than the one I had before traveling.
