A Memorable Visit to Takamatsu Castle in the Rain
高松城遗址的点评
点评：I visited Takamatsu Castle in mid-April 2026, after visiting Manno Reservoir and before returning to Takamatsu Airport. It was raining quite heavily by the time I arrived, but the castle was still well worth visiting.
Takamatsu Castle is regarded as one of Japan’s three great “water castles,” together with Nakatsu Castle and Imabari Castle. Its location facing the Seto Inland Sea, and the use of seawater in its moats, make it quite different from many inland Japanese castles. Although the main keep no longer survives, the layout of the castle grounds still gives a strong impression of how carefully it was designed for defense.
I entered from the area near the Asahi Bridge and Asahi Gate, then walked through the masugata-style defensive enclosure and continued toward the Sakura Gomon Gate. This gate, once leading toward the lord’s residence, was destroyed during the 1945 air raid on Takamatsu but was faithfully reconstructed in 2022. I was impressed by the city’s efforts to restore and preserve the castle’s history.
Another highlight was Hiunkaku, a large villa built in 1917 for the former Matsudaira family. Although seismic reinforcement work was underway during my visit, the building and surrounding garden still added greatly to the atmosphere of the castle grounds.
Because of the rain, boat tours around the moat had been suspended, which was a little disappointing. Even so, walking across the narrow Saya-bashi bridge to the Honmaru and the former main keep site helped me appreciate the distinctive layout of the castle, with the Honmaru isolated within the moats.
Takamatsu Castle is not a place to visit expecting a surviving castle keep, but it is highly recommended for anyone interested in castle layouts, water castles, or the history of Takamatsu. Even in the rain, it was a memorable final stop on my Kagawa trip.
