点评:I came here on the suggestion of some friends who'd not been able to visit when they were last in Dundee. Well, they missed a real gem.
It's a bit off the beaten track, so a £6 taxi was necessary to whisk me from the waterfront to the museum.
Arriving at lunchtime and my favourite lentil soup being on the menu, I indulged happily. Very tasty it was too, although the accompanying cheese scone had not reacted well to being blitzed in the microwave and was pretty stodgy. (£6.95).
The 'Jute Museum', as many call it, certainly deals in depth with Dundee's famous industry, with comprehensive information boards, a myriad of photographs, short films and much, much more.
For me, the enthusiastic volunteers made the day, from dressing up in period costume to demonstrating many of the machines used in the manufacturing of jute. One minor criticism I have is the lack of seating in the machine room and in some other areas.
I also particularly enjoyed the social history displays which included a fun re-creation of a 'cludgie', (Scottish name for an outside toilet).
At just before 3pm, with a fair bit still to see, I decided to go for a cuppa and a bit of cake, only to be told that the museum was about to close - two hours early.
I was also somewhat irked that they had given a flat no to posting (at my expense) a £38 clock I had wanted to buy but was concerned it would be too big for my suitcase for my Easyjet flight home. With the cafe closed, I couldn't even buy it to despatch myself and also unable to purchase some other items that had taken my fancy.
No announcement had been made about the early closing and whoever made the decision needs to think rather more carefully than they did about the implications of their actions.
It's a real pity and soured what had been an excellent visit and which should have merited a five-star review. They also need to do something about their e-tickets wrongly giving the museum address as Riverside Drive.
