A Great Museum, A Credit to PNG
National Museum and Art Gallery的点评
点评：There is a lot of traveller feedback on the lack of things to do in Port Moresby. Somehow, the modern capital, scattered across several suburbs and built on arid, sunburnt ground, seems underwhelming. A poor introduction to the country perhaps?However if we turn the glass and try to see it as half full, rather than half empty, the National Museum does serve as an impressive and important introduction to the country.
The architecture is impressive, with an entrance hall that mimics a Sepik Spirit House, with tall house posts. This echoes the architecture of the Parliament Building close by. Inside, is a treasure trove of artefacts from all parts of PNG. Some of the exhibits are massive, like the full size trading canoe from the Trobriands or the frontal facade of Haus Tambaran from Maprick. There seems to be some uncertainty whether to display artefacts by region, function or date of acquisition. This leads to a feel of exploring a slightly chaotic archive or storage facility.
The Museum has other focuses, apart from traditional culture. One floor covers WW2 and the Kokoda Trail. A full size aircraft hanger built in the grounds, displays fighter planes (allied and Japanese) that crashed in PNG between 1940 and 1945. Also covered is the disappearance of Amelia Earhart.
The Museum has a few negative issues. The ban on photography seems overly precious and petty. There is no money for air conditioning, so it's unclear if the collection is being chewed by moths and other bugs as you swelter and browse. A small cafe and museum shop would be a useful addition.
Overall though, a few hours well spent and an informative introduction to PNG
