An incredible insight into Islamic Cairo
Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan的点评
点评：The Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan is one of those places in Cairo that really gives you an appreciation for just how ambitious the city’s architecture was centuries ago.
Built in the 14th century during the Mamluk period, the scale of the mosque is impressive as soon as you arrive. The huge stone façade and towering entrance give you a real sense of the importance this building once held, and stepping inside takes you into a vast central courtyard surrounded by four monumental iwans.
What we particularly enjoyed was being able to wander through the different sections and take in the incredible architectural details. It’s not just about the size either—the stonework, arches and sheer proportions of the building make it feel very different from many of the other historic sites you’ll visit around Cairo.
It’s also located directly opposite the Al-Rifa'i Mosque, which makes visiting the two together an easy addition to a day exploring Islamic Cairo.
That said, this probably isn't somewhere you'll spend hours and hours. We’d allow around 30–60 minutes to properly explore, take some photos and appreciate the architecture before moving on to the next stop.
If you're interested in Cairo's history and architecture, we think it’s well worth adding to your itinerary. And even if you're not particularly knowledgeable about Islamic architecture, the sheer scale of Sultan Hassan makes it difficult not to be impressed.
Our verdict: A fascinating piece of Cairo's history and an impressive example of Mamluk architecture. Definitely worth adding to an Islamic Cairo itinerary, particularly when combined with Al-Rifa'i Mosque just across the road.
